A teacher becoming a radio personality is not an uncommon venture, but being a successful one has its challenges! How does one go from the classroom, to the studio and barber shop, plus keep a family? Kevin Freeman, known as "Newman", has mastered a good formula, that seems to be a successful one. Kevin is a very humble sweet man, at least that is the person that he presented to me. I found myself talking with him over 2 hours, without a boring moment. He is quite fascinating for such a young man.
Kevin Freeman hosts the radio show, "Praise" 191.4. I listened in on a couple of the shows, and he is so funny. The scene was very casual and it made his guests feel at home. He is also a promoter at KTSU radio, a station hailing from Texas Southern University.
Kevin was a DJ for 20 years, and this was a good foundation for him to have started his own radio show, 'Praise 191.4, only 1 year ago. He comes from a family of musicians, his grandfather and uncle were Quartet Singers in Louisiana. Funky Larry, Thomas Miles and Steve Harvey are Kevin's mentors and they greatly influenced him.
Kevin's passion is to set the platform for independent artist that have a love for singing. Kevin loves being social with people , making them feel important, and that is his big incentive moments in life, when it comes to his profession in radio.
like any job or business, they will come with challenges, for Kevin, being able to identify what God wants for his life, instead of what Kevin wants is a challenge, as a DJ/host.
Kevin Freeman has been a manager of people for 15 years. To help Kevin better serve people and remain in the will of God, he prays and listens to the artist music, before playing it on the air, and that is how Kevin prepares for a set.
Freeman's love for people allows him to share his life experiences, from doing wrong to doing things the right way and being an avid listener.
Kevin has some long term relationships with artist like, J.Paul, Brian Jack and Marcus, because of his first love - Zydeco music! He loves gospel music and manages Kimberle Braggs music.
To listen and tune in to Praise 191.4, friend him on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/newman.freeman.10?pnref=lhc.friends
Once you are friends, Kevin will send you a notification that he is live, so you may tune in to 191.4. When you are tuned in, you will hear the songs Kevin has already listened to, that give a message.
With so many artist pulling in the old school artist, I had to ask Kevin if he thought we will ever get some good old music like in the 70's and 80's, when music was actually music?
Yes the 70's and 80's feel will come back, if the artist can find themselves and stop trying to be like everybody else. The one thing I do is feel the audience. Are see which Genre of music that making the most money. Ole school will make you a lot of money, said Kevin.
As any good artist will offer advice to the new up coming artist, Kevin offers the advice to
"stay real to self and be original".
